Subject: Local Charleston County School story idea for you!

Hi Devna!

My name is Kiley Pettit, and I have a potential story idea for you related to a local reading and literacy campaign that is happening within the elementary schools of the Charleston County School District.

I really enjoy your work with the Post and Courier Education Lab—including your latest article about the newest CCSD cultural awareness goals. Since you have covered social justice issues within education, I thought this reading effort within Charleston County Schools may be of particular interest.

The Charleston Battery saw a need for increased literacy among second-grade students after news that 25% of third graders last year failed South Carolina’s standardized reading test and were held back.

As a way to help improve reading skills, the Battery developed Reading Is Cool for the four Charleston Promise Neighborhood elementary schools in which players will spend a couple days a week throughout October reading to second-graders.

I have attached the press release along with some of our recent social media posts. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or need more information.

Sincerely,

Kiley

Sample TikTok Campaign: Book Talk with the Battery

TikTok videos or Instagram reels that highlight the Battery players. To get people to see their work with the kids and to motivate the kids to read more and come to the events because they consider the players to be role models

  • Have videos with the Battery players interviewing kids (and kids interviewing them) one-on-one asking them questions about their lives and also the program—”What's your favorite book “How do you feel when you read”, Adds humor and perspective from kids on the program to see their growth and experiences

  • Have videos of the players interacting and reading with the kids at Just for Kicks events
